Meets Thursdays 5-6pm upstairs at Coffee Republic, George Street for English circle followed also from 7pm, a Pub Night Out at a different pub each week, together with local people on OxfordNightsOut.com . Thursdays is meant to be an English speaking based program of events. However, we also meets Tuesdays from 8pm onwards, upstairs at The Cape of Good Hope pub (at 1 Iffley road by St. Clements roundabout just after Magdalene bridge). £1 donations towards running costs are requested on Tuesdays and Thursdays language exchange meetups. The pub night out is free and lets try and attract more British people to join us.
STRUCTURE:
The Tuesday events, you can just sit down at any table and a different language is spoken. You have the opportunity to practice either your English or a foreign language, as you wish. Languages spoken depend on who attends but usually include French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Russian & Italian. On average, about 10-40 people attend and perhaps about 40% British to 60% people from overseas.
LOOK FOR US ON FACEBOOK plus FIND A LANGUAGE EXCHANGE PARTNER HERE!
Please note that there is also a facebook page titled 'Oxford Language Lounge'. The facebook sister site for that group is titled, 'Learn English in Oxford'.
I hope to make both these social groups and their respective facebook pages, into a space to promote greater international exchange in Oxford. These pages can also be used to share news and advice and ask questions e.g. "Where can I buy halal meat?"/ "Which school is best?"/ "I need a room to rent" etc./
If you prefer to practice a language, one-on-one, with a conversation partner, then that's fine too. Just create a profile page here (free) and advertise what kind of language exchange partner you're looking for so others can see your profile and contact you directly via your profile. You will either receive a public 'greeting' or a 'mail' message sent via your profile page, directly to your inbox.
WHY 'OXFORD LANGUAGE LOUNGE' AND WHAT YOU CAN GET OUT OF THIS CLUB:
When anyone moves to a new town or country, don't you also find that it can be difficult to find a social life and meet new people? Studying a language is important but if you want to improve your confidence in English or another foreign language, you still need to create real-life opportunities to socialise and practice it with native and with non-native speakers, in order to develop fluency. Think of our club as being a bit like your 'lounge'- it's basically free to attend and everyone will welcome you.
If you have ideas for other social events which complement these aims, please inform us all by posting your event message on this website by clicking on 'Home' followed by 'Lets' on the website. Alternatively, click on 'Discussions' and 'message board' > 'post a message'. If you wish to organise events and host at events, please don't be shy! HELP is wanted!
ABOUT THIS GROUP'S SPONSOR:
We welcome extra new sponsors but currently this group is sponsored and subsidised by http://www.ILoveOxford.com
I Love Oxford runs Social Event Saturday Pub Tours plus Daily Walking Tours in Oxford.
ABOUT OTHER MEETUP GROUPS:
This website uses meetup.com events calendar software and if you search on www.meetup.com, you can find many other social and language related groups. Please take a look! As for myself, as organiser, before moving to Oxford in June 2010, I ran a similiar meetup group to this one, which was called, 'Edinburgh International'. I guess I just like social networking & I enjoy having an active social life. I work as a walking tour guide and as a language tutor, so I enjoy creating opportunities for myself, my students and my friends to socialize while practicing language skills.
Besides this group, I also invite you to visit 'I Love Oxford Nights Out' (formerly 'Oxford Singles' but now just used to invite everyone local to local social events) plus 'I Love Oxford' ( a website to introduce everything great about Oxford and events plus offers at local businesses.
